For over 35 years, Tom Heminover - a client in the Day Training and Habilitation Program in Mankato - has worked with Team Leader Tom Maloney. The pair understand each other in a unique way. Tom has limited speech ability, but through informal signs, body gestures and sounds, Tom is able to effectively communicate with his team leader and other staff in the area.
“I know Tom and I know what he’s interested
in,” said Maloney. “I know his family - both
immediate and extended. We’re able to communicate very well with each other.”
When he’s not working on packaging and assembly jobs at the Map Drive Facility, Tom
works at a community job at Mexican Village Restaurant in Mankato. Maloney said having
a close relationship with Tom has been key
to his success.
“Relationships are everything here,” he said. “People can read if you’re being genuine or
not - it doesn’t matter what words you use - the clients can sense if you’re being genuine. Tom
can easily sense this. The clients can see how much effort you put into each interaction with them... You have to meet the folks where they're at. If you do that, your relationship with them will be successful.”
